[PRESS RELEASE] InterDigital and Atmel Sign Agreement to Offer AIM ANTENNA Product Solutions to WLAN Customers
InterDigital and Atmel Sign Agreement to Offer AIM ANTENNA Product Solutions to WLAN Customers
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. & SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 1, 2004--InterDigital Communications Corporation (Nasdaq:IDCC), a leading architect, designer and provider of wireless technology and product platforms, and Atmel Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML), a global leader in the development and fabrication of advanced semiconductor solutions, announced today the establishment of a cooperative agreement to offer InterDigital's AIM (Adaptive Interference Management) ANTENNA(TM) product solution in Atmel's Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) products.
Under the terms of the agreement, InterDigital will license its AIM ANTENNA technology, which includes patented antenna designs and steering software, to Atmel for incorporation on Atmel's WLAN platforms. Atmel and InterDigital will both market this performance enhancing capability to selected OEMs and ODMs.
The AIM ANTENNA is a low cost, printed circuit board type, multi-element, steerable, directional antenna combined with software steering algorithm running on the existing device processor. Devices enabled with AIM ANTENNA technology have substantial performance advantages in home and office settings, where interference, signal fading and poor quality of service are significant problems. The AIM ANTENNA product can typically eliminate fade situations with demonstrated throughput rate increases of more than 100 percent. Also, throughput at the edge of coverage can be increased by an average of 80 percent. AIM ANTENNA products are easy to integrate, cost-effective and available for incorporation into client devices and access points.
Mark Lemmo, Senior Business Development Officer stated, "We are pleased that Atmel has chosen InterDigital's cost-effective high performance AIM ANTENNA technology to enhance their WLAN products. Atmel's AIM ANTENNA enabled products will be differentiated with superior high data rate coverage and immunity to multipath holes."
Through radio partners, Atmel has developed complete reference designs for PCMCIA cards, CF Cards, USB dongles/sticks, Mini-PCI cards and Access Points. These reference design kits include all the information required to manufacture a complete product utilizing Atmel supplied WLAN chips. Available to qualified OEMs and ODMs, Atmel's designs have enabled the highly favorable cost over performance solutions in the market today for many major companies. Atmel's integration of InterDigital's AIM ANTENNA products into its WLAN platforms demonstrates its commitment to providing products with significant user benefits.
Richard Bisset, Atmel's Wireless Business Marketing Director said, "We selected InterDigital's AIM ANTENNA product because of its performance characteristics, cost-effectiveness, ease of implementation and availability for today's products. Atmel's optimized chip set with proven firmware and development tools create a unique total solution for OEM customers. Having AIM ANTENNA technology integrated in the Atmel reference designs enables our customers to market a new class of high-performance and differentiated devices."
