InterDigital Communications Corporation (Nasdaq:IDCC), a leading architect, designer and provider of wireless technology product platforms and product solutions, is showcasing live demonstrations of its pioneering Adaptive Interference Management(TM) (AIM) solutions at 3GSM World Congress this week in Cannes, France.
The AIM product suite, which includes the AIM ANTENNA(TM) and AIM PERFORMWARE(TM) solutions, is a set of low cost, high performance products that reduce RF interference, enhance network capacity and coverage, extend battery life, deliver higher average data rates and enable equipment manufacturers and semiconductor suppliers to differentiate their WLAN product offerings.
InterDigital's live AIM ANTENNA product demonstration features an access point and AIM ANTENNA enabled client device operating over an 802.11 WLAN system in a multipath fade environment. The demonstration shows the substantial performance improvements in signal strength and data throughput rates that can be achieved using the AIM ANTENNA solution.
The live AIM PERFORMWARE product demonstration operates in an 802.11 WLAN environment composed of multiple access points, including an AIM PERFORMWARE enabled access point, and a client device. The AIM PERFORMWARE enabled access point dynamically scans the environment, measures interference and automatically changes channels as needed to optimize network utilization and improve data throughput rates.

InterDigital's AIM ANTENNA solution combines patented beam steering software and antenna designs to deliver maximum performance to WLAN devices (including PC cards, USB sticks and dongles), as well as fully integrated mobile devices. Using a high gain steerable beam, InterDigital's AIM ANTENNA products significantly enhance signal quality by allowing terminal devices to transmit and receive signals directionally, toward the desired signal and away from interference.
The AIM ANTENNA product has generated strong results in field tests showing substantial performance improvements in WLAN devices. In a wireless indoor environment where coverage holes frequently exist, AIM ANTENNA products can typically eliminate fade situations with demonstrated throughput rate increases of more than 100 percent. Field tests conducted at the outer edge of the access point coverage area have also shown performance improvements greater than 80 percent.
Available for integration into existing WLAN access point and client devices, the AIM ANTENNA solutions are easy to implement and require no new processing hardware. AIM ANTENNA technologies for cellular devices are in active development for future offerings as part of the Company's family of AIM products.
InterDigital's AIM PERFORMWARE solution is an RF interference management middleware product that minimizes the impact of RF interference in WLAN networks. The solution is a modular and portable software architecture that can be easily integrated into a WLAN manufacturer's access point platform with minimal customization. Using patented RF measurement-based technologies, a WLAN access point enabled with AIM PERFORMWARE can dynamically monitor the radio environment and automatically optimize important system parameters such as channel and power. The result is optimum performance, predictable and continuous coverage, and improved customer satisfaction.
Access points enabled with the AIM PERFORMWARE product show substantial performance improvements over standard access points. For example, in tests with seven access points serving 70 WLAN client devices in a large office environment, the system enabled with the AIM PERFORMWARE solution operated at average file transfer speeds per user of six times greater than the same system using standard access points without the AIM PERFORMWARE product.
